Overview

The Clarity SL is 3M Unitek's self-ligating ceramic bracket, combining the esthetic translucency of the Clarity ceramic bracket line with the mechanical advantages of passive self-ligation. The bracket uses a ceramic sliding door mechanism — not an elastomeric tie — to hold the archwire, reducing friction and allowing freer wire engagement during leveling and aligning. The design maintains the twin bracket geometry and prescription of the standard Clarity brackets. The successor, Clarity Ultra SL, adds a wider ceramic door for improved rotational control.

Clinical & technical

Mechanism of action

The ceramic sliding door closes over the bracket slot, locking the archwire without ligature ties. In passive mode (door closed), the wire slides freely within the slot during tooth movement — lower friction than elastomeric ligatures. The reliable door mechanism resists unplanned opening during treatment and provides positive closure feedback. The wide ceramic door (in Clarity Ultra) covers a broad mesial-distal span, improving rotational control.

Indications & case selection

Adult and adolescent patients requesting esthetic fixed appliances; cases where a fully ceramic or tooth-colored full bracket set is preferred over metal; practices offering a premium esthetic bracket option; patients who previously wore metal braces and prefer a more discreet treatment.

Contraindications & limitations

Ceramic brackets are more brittle than metal — higher risk of bracket fracture under high occlusal forces or in deep bite cases; debonding is more complex (stress concentrator design addresses this, but ceramic still requires care); higher cost than metal brackets; translucency means the ceramic may take on some staining over long treatments.

Lab fabrication notes

Not a lab-fabricated appliance — Clarity SL brackets are manufactured by 3M (Solventum) and supplied to orthodontic practices directly. Lab involvement is in indirect bonding setups (custom trays) if indirect bonding protocol is used.
