Mechanism of action

The modified tongue crib is an elaborated version of the standard palatal crib (Tongue crib) with additional wire elements — extended lateral wings, a wider anterior frame, or secondary barrier loops — that increase the effective barrier area. The wider coverage prevents the tongue from working around the crib laterally or inferiorly, addressing failure modes of simpler designs.

Lab fabrication notes

Begin with a standard crib configuration. Add lateral extensions from the primary crib wire that curve buccally around the upper canines at the level of the gingival margin, then loop back to the primary framework. All extensions must be soldered at every junction for rigidity. Confirm no wire contacts gingival tissue with the model in occlusion. Polish all surfaces that contact soft tissue.
