The full labial retainer (wraparound retainer) is a removable retention appliance featuring a continuous labial bow that extends around the full arch from second molar to second molar, with lingual clasps for retention and palatal acrylic for stability. Unlike the standard Hawley retainer (which has a labial bow contacting only the front six teeth), the wraparound's circumferential wire contacts all labial surfaces from the posterior to the anterior, providing maximum retention control of tooth positions. It is the choice retention appliance for comprehensive orthodontic cases with expanded arch widths, rotations corrected, or post-extraction space closure — any situation where the clinician wants the most robust circumferential control of tooth positions.
The circumferential labial wire maintains the labial surfaces of all teeth in their post-treatment positions. Lingual clasps (typically between premolars and molars) engage interproximal undercuts to anchor the appliance. The palatal acrylic provides rigidity and maintains palatal tooth positions. Full-arch labial contact is more retentive than a short Hawley bow because any tendency for a tooth to rotate or tip labially is immediately resisted by the continuous wire. The wraparound is also more forgiving of minor settling — the wire can accommodate small tooth movements as the occlusion settles, while still maintaining the overall arch form.
Post-comprehensive fixed appliance treatment; cases with significant rotation corrections; post-expansion cases where arch width must be maintained; patients who have had significant tooth movement (where relapse potential is high); full-arch retention preference; patients who might not comply with Essix retainer protocols (some patients prefer the feel of wire over the full-coverage thermoformed tray). Full labial variants (upper and lower) are ordered where bilateral full-arch retention is needed.
More expensive and more complex to fabricate than a Hawley or Essix retainer — time-consuming wire bending and lingual clasp fabrication. Requires more patient care — metal clasps can catch food. The continuous wire can be uncomfortable if not polished well. For patients who want maximum aesthetics, Essix (Essix retainer) is preferred. Not suitable for significant overbite cases where wire extension to posteriors would cause bite interference.

The 0.036″ wraparound wire must follow the precise labial contour of the post-treatment arch — too tight creates unnecessary tooth movement; too loose provides inadequate retention. Lingual clasp fabrication: saw the interproximal groove on the model, place the 0.018″ wire into the groove depth, create a retention loop in the palatal acrylic, and extend the wire end to at least the buccal surface. Acrylic processing must not displace the wire framework. Polishing all wire ends and acrylic surfaces is essential for patient comfort. CFL offers a wide range from (standard Lower/Upper Full Labial) to (Modified Continuous Full Labial) — the higher-priced variants likely reflect added complexity or modified designs.
