Overview

A flexible partial denture (Valplast, Flexite, or similar) is a removable prosthetic appliance fabricated from a flexible nylon thermoplastic rather than rigid PMMA acrylic. The flexibility allows the appliance to flex slightly on insertion and removal, gripping natural tooth undercuts without rigid metal clasps. The material is tooth-colored (pink gingival tone) and clasp elements are also flexible and tooth-colored, making this a metal-free, esthetic partial denture option. In orthodontic lab contexts, flexible partials are used to replace missing teeth during active treatment (e.g., holding space for a missing lateral incisor or premolar during aligner or braces treatment) or as medium-term prosthetics when implants or fixed bridgework are planned but not yet placed.

Clinical & technical

Mechanism of action

The flexible material adapts to natural undercuts on adjacent teeth, providing retention through elastic deformation without rigid metal clasps. This makes the appliance more comfortable and esthetic than a traditional acrylic partial denture. The pontic teeth (artificial teeth) are either pre-fabricated stock teeth set into the gingival-colored base or custom-sculpted for the specific edentulous space.

Indications & case selection

Missing teeth during orthodontic treatment (temporary prosthetic); short-to-medium-term tooth replacement while awaiting implants; patients who decline fixed prosthetics; esthetic anterior tooth replacement where metal clasps are objectionable; posterior tooth replacement where cost or medical status precludes implants; pontic included in CFL's flexible partial for aligner cases where a pontic tooth is needed in the aligner itself.

Contraindications & limitations

Not a definitive long-term prosthetic — flexible materials fatigue and discolor over 3–7 years. Cannot be easily adjusted or relined (unlike PMMA). Pontic forces are distributed to adjacent soft tissue and teeth, not osseointegrated — cannot prevent alveolar bone resorption under the pontic. Not appropriate as the sole long-term solution when implants are planned.

Lab fabrication notes

Injection molding is required for Valplast — not thermoformed or processed like acrylic. CFL offers: FLEXITE W PONTIC and Valplast Acrylic. The "Valplast Acrylic" may be a repair material or a component price. The Flexite with pontic is the complete flexible partial.
