Overview

The Kiddie appliance is CFL's habit appliance designed specifically for younger patients in primary or early mixed dentition, typically ages 4–7. The arch dimensions, wire gauges, and crib element are scaled down for smaller palates and primary molar band sizes. The clinical goal is identical to other fixed habit appliances — break digit sucking and tongue thrust before they cause significant dental changes — but the construction is optimized for the unique anatomical constraints of primary dentition.

Clinical & technical

Mechanism of action

Same deterrence principle as adult fixed habit appliances (Halterman appliance, Thumb and finger crib appliance): a fixed transpalatal element with anterior spurs or a crib blocks digit access to the palate and interrupts tongue thrust. Optimized for primary dentition arch width (~30–34 mm intermolar), shorter clinical crowns, and the more delicate gingival tissues of young patients.

Indications & case selection

dentition

permanent incisors erupt

Contraindications & limitations

structure)

child may require behavioral management)

compromised; time placement to at least 12 months of primary molar stability

Design & fabrication

Components & materials

smaller gauge than permanent molar bands; confirm band size from model before ordering

appliances

proportional to smaller palate

interference in smaller oral cavity

Lab fabrication notes

Work from primary dentition models — do not scale from a permanent dentition model. Primary molar crowns have less pronounced undercuts; confirm band seating before waxing. Adapt TPA at minimum 1.5 mm relief from palatal mucosa (primary dentition has more prominent rugae). Spur length: 3–4 mm maximum — primary dentition patients have shorter incisor extrusion heights. All tips blunted; all solder joints smooth; polish to high shine. Hygiene is challenging in this age group, so all surfaces must be easily cleanable.

Common variants & modifications

with constriction + digit habit (common co-occurrence)

molar clasps; lower force on primary teeth

alongside digit deterrence

primary dentition; mixed dentition patients may be large enough for a standard Halterman (Removable anterior bite plate)

retention on primary incisors if crowding is present
