Tooth-borne rapid palatal expander (Hygienic Rapid Expander) with a central jackscrew and metal framework banded to molars; no or minimal palatal acrylic. Activated by a key at prescribed intervals to open the mid-palatal suture, followed by a retention phase of several months to stabilize the new width. Superior hygiene access compared to tissue-borne designs.
Distinguished from the Haas by absence of palatal acrylic pads (tooth-borne only). Leone RPE is a common lab variant.
