Fixed intra-alveolar pediatric space maintainer used when the second primary molar is lost before eruption of the first permanent molar. A band or crown on the primary first molar supports a distal extension that projects subgingivally to contact the mesial surface of the unerupted permanent first molar, guiding its eruption path and preventing mesial drift into the extraction space.
Also called intra-alveolar space maintainer. Requires radiographic monitoring of permanent molar eruption. Removed once permanent molar has erupted sufficiently.
