Hairy Tongue

Clinical Definition

Benign condition in which filiform papillae on the dorsum of the tongue become elongated and may be stained by food, tobacco, or bacteria.

Patient-Friendly

A harmless condition where the top of the tongue looks hairy or dark because the tiny bumps have grown long and picked up stains.
