Category: Pediatric | Difficulty: Basic | Priority: Nice-to-know

Clinical Definition

Inhalation of a titratable mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen to reduce anxiety and enhance cooperation during dental treatment.

Patient-Friendly

Breathing in 'happy air' through a small nose mask to help kids feel more relaxed during treatment.

Related Terms

[[happy air; laughing gas]]

Notes

Always emphasize safety and that the child stays awake | Common Misconception: Patients sometimes think nitrous oxide puts them to sleep — nitrous provides anxiolysis and mild analgesia but does not induce sleep. Patients remain conscious and can communicate throughout.
