Overview

The Damon Clear is Ormco's ceramic self-ligating bracket, combining the passive self-ligation mechanics of the Damon system with the esthetic appeal of a clear ceramic bracket. The SpinTek slide (a ceramic sliding door) closes over the bracket slot, locking the archwire without elastomeric ties. In passive mode, the wire slides freely within the closed slot, reducing friction significantly compared to conventional tied brackets. The bracket is made from stain-resistant polycrystalline alumina, maintaining clarity throughout treatment. The system is rhomboidal with color-coded positioning gauges for the 3–3 region.

Clinical & technical

Mechanism of action

The SpinTek door closes with a reciprocal force mechanism — using the SpinTek instrument to open or close the door disperses forces in opposite directions for a net force of 0 kg, making wire changes fast and comfortable even with calculus buildup. In passive self-ligation, the closed door simply constrains the wire within the slot; the wire is free to slide, reducing friction during leveling and alignment. Lower friction means lighter forces can drive tooth movement, which may reduce discomfort and improve efficiency during initial archwire stages.

Indications & case selection

Adults and adolescents requesting esthetic fixed appliances; patients who want the mechanical benefits of self-ligation (reduced friction, fewer appointments) with clear brackets; comprehensive fixed appliance cases; combined with Damon metal brackets for upper anterior esthetic / lower posterior functional setup.

Contraindications & limitations

Ceramic more brittle than metal — bracket fracture risk in deep bite or high occlusal force cases; ceramic door adds some bulk vs. metal SL brackets; debonding requires care; cost higher than metal or conventional ceramic; deep overbite patients should be assessed before using ceramic in lower anterior.
