Overview

Separators (spacers) are placed between the contacts of teeth adjacent to molars requiring bands, 1–2 weeks before the banding appointment. The separator slowly forces the teeth apart by a fraction of a millimeter — enough for the molar band to slide over the contact and seat on the molar without trauma or excessive force. Two types are common: elastic separators (small elastic rings stretched and placed interproximally) and metal spring separators (brass or SS wire bent into a spring that wedges between teeth). Patients may experience mild discomfort (soreness) for 2–3 days after placement.

Clinical & technical

Mechanism of action

The elastic or spring separator exerts a continuous gentle force on the adjacent tooth surfaces, slowly displacing the contacts and creating 0.5–1 mm of interproximal space. This space is maintained by the separator until the banding appointment. At the appointment, separators are removed and the molar band is slid over the contact and cemented.

Indications & case selection

Any case requiring molar bands (Herbst, Nance, lingual arch, space maintainer, Hyrax, MARA, etc.); placed 1–2 weeks before banding; all ages.

Contraindications & limitations

Tight contacts may resist separator placement (metal spring separators are preferred for very tight contacts); separator can fall out if the contact is too loose — must be replaced; patient must avoid sticky foods while wearing separators.
