The Habit Quad Helix combines the arch expansion function of the Quad Helix (Quad Helix) with a palatal crib or rake element for habit breaking. When a patient presents with both a narrow maxillary arch AND an oral habit (a common combination — the habit itself often causes the arch constriction), this combination appliance treats both problems simultaneously. The Quad Helix helices provide expansion while the crib blocks the habit.

The habit quad helix combines the expansionary action of the quad helix (Quad Helix) — a fixed spring-loaded appliance that expands the upper arch transversely through gentle continuous force — with a crib or spur element that deters tongue thrusting or digit habits. The quad helix's palatal wire loops provide an anatomically convenient framework onto which cribs or spurs can be soldered, eliminating the need for a second appliance.

Fabricate the quad helix first per standard protocol (Quad Helix). Then solder the crib/spur framework to the anterior wire section of the quad, just posterior to the incisors. Spurs should project downward and slightly posteriorly, 3–5 mm below the palatal wire level. Confirm all solder joints are smooth. Activation of the helix for expansion must not displace spur positions significantly — verify after 3 mm activation on the model.
