Overview

Ortho Technology's PURE Sapphire bracket system uses monocrystalline alumina — the same crystal structure as synthetic sapphire — to produce the clearest available esthetic bracket. Monocrystalline alumina transmits light differently from polycrystalline alumina (PCA), giving it superior optical transparency. Each PURE bracket is diamond and heat polished with rounded, smooth corners. The bonding base is coated with aluminum oxide spheres, creating millions of mechanical undercuts that lock with adhesive for secure retention while allowing predictable debonding at treatment end.

Clinical & technical

Mechanism of action

Standard twin bracket mechanics — the archwire is engaged in the slot and ligated with elastomeric rings or SS ligatures. No self-ligation. Conventional wire progression from light NiTi to rectangular SS. The monocrystalline structure makes the bracket mechanically stronger against torque fracture than PCA brackets.

Indications & case selection

Adult patients demanding maximum esthetic clarity; high visibility anterior teeth where standard PCA brackets are insufficiently clear; patients willing to pay a premium for the clearest available esthetic bracket.

Contraindications & limitations

More expensive than PCA ceramic; monocrystalline brackets can be harder to debond predictably — the alumina oxide sphere base addresses this but requires care; no self-ligation (elastomeric ligatures required — some staining risk).
