Overview

smartmoves is Great Lakes Dental Technologies' clear aligner product, differentiated by its ComfortTrack material and a unique soft-to-hard aligner progression. Patients start with softer, more flexible aligners that are comfortable to adapt to; once adjusted, they progress to harder aligners that provide the active tooth movement forces. This two-material approach aims to reduce initial aligner discomfort while maintaining treatment efficiency. The system uses advanced 3D software for treatment planning and is compatible with any intraoral scanner. Most cases use 2–6 aligners and are completed in a few months.

Clinical & technical

Mechanism of action

ComfortTrack soft aligners are worn first — they adapt to the teeth without significant force, helping the patient acclimate to wearing aligners and seating the trays properly. Subsequent hard ComfortTrack aligners deliver the planned tooth movement forces. Each aligner programs specific anterior tooth movements (tipping, minor rotation, spacing). Sequential aligner changes drive teeth toward the target position. The system integrates with GLDT's 3D planning software, and the doctor approves the digital setup before fabrication.

Indications & case selection

Mild anterior crowding or spacing; post-orthodontic relapse; anterior alignment for cosmetic improvement; patients who find hard aligners initially uncomfortable; practices using Great Lakes as their primary dental lab who want an in-house aligner option.

Contraindications & limitations

Limited to anterior minor movements — not for comprehensive cases; posterior occlusion not treated; significant rotations and torque changes not achievable; same general limited-aligner contraindications as MTM and Simpli5.

Lab fabrication notes

Great Lakes Dental Technologies fabricates smartmoves in-house. Doctor submits impressions or scan files; GLDT produces the 3D treatment plan; doctor approves; aligners are shipped. CFL does not fabricate smartmoves — CFL's aligner service is under Clear aligner.
